Anna Belousova made a pilgrimage to OFFF Barcelona, where she learned from some of the most innovative visual minds in the business. This creative festival featured inspiring discussions as well as some hands-on experience in design workshops. Every attendant and speaker had something unique to contribute, but a few in particular stuck out.

If dark humor was a person, it would be Wasted Rita. Her illustrations include handwritten breakup letters and “unfortunate” cookies with snarky, backhanded compliments written on small pieces of paper. Wasted Rita told her story of how her depression and overall dissatisfaction with life drives her creativity. She channels her feelings of negativity into something outside of herself, in the external world of her projects.

Anton & Irene are designers with a whimsical appeal and a 60/40 formula for satisfaction. As a creative, it is important to spend no more than nine months of the year on client projects. The remaining three should be dedicated to personal projects that provide a needed creative release. Ironically, it is usually the personal projects that clients best remember designers for, and Anton & Irene have had little problem scoring top-tier work with companies including National Geographic, BBC and Apple.

Animator and designer Santiago Carrasquilla got the opportunity of his lifetime when he was hired by the master: Stefan Sagmeister. He described his experiences working for him straight out of school and advised everyone in the crowd on how to stand out in the vast industry. Then, a screening of Sagmeister’s own “The Happy Film” documented his pursuit of happiness over six years. Obviously, things are never that easy. In his own words, he says “Trying to chase after something more meaningful turned out to be a big pain in the ass.”

There is endless potential for creativity surrounding us. That’s why we love when members of the Cocoon team are able to work remotely from all corners of the planet. At the end of the day, inspiration is only a plane ride away.
