Fashion is an industry that focuses on appearance. Our daily clothing choices have a powerful effect over our personal identity, especially for women. Unfortunately, those who are in tough life situations have limited access to this form of self-expression. Luckily, Lucie Kutálková of LEEDA in Prague’s Old Town is one designer who is successfully extending fashion and beauty to all.

Our Creative Breakfast felt straight off the catwalk. Lucie takes time to master her art and refers to her clothing line as “slow fashion”. This eco-friendly approach makes full use of materials and reuses scraps of fabric that many designers in the fashion industry throw away. Much of her clothing has a space-age feel reminiscent of Star Trek. The line between human consciousness and artificial intelligence is difficult to identify, and this keeps Lucie both scared and inspired.

She is motivated not only to create, but to benefit the greater good. Lucie applies her love of fashion and humanity to her latest work - the Metraž Project. These workshops allow women with financial difficulties and other life problems to sit in the designer’s seat. They create stunning new accessories from old jewelry and other materials which shoppers then purchase. The women gain not only financial aid, but a renewed sense of confidence. The Metraž Project proves that glamour and beauty always exist within us, regardless of our circumstances.

We are what we wear. In empowering the world through clothing, we can open endless possibilities for ourselves and others. With LEEDA and the Metraž Project, Lucie defines the modern purpose of fashion - to create a community that accepts everyone and makes use of everything. This attitude will never go out of style.
